Air pump & relay V70-XC70 98

Last night, the "air pump" kicked on 1min after turning the car off. Completely drained the battery-- jumped the car, restarted the car, turned it off and the pump turned on again. Had to remove the relay to make it stop.

Questions: What is the function of the "air pump", seems to be a vacuum hose to the air box? Does air move thru the airbox without it? Can I drive the car without it, until I replace the relay? Is this a relay problem, or something more? Thanks.
