Which Systems Affect Fuel Economy?

To the best of my knowledge there are four temperature sensors in this car. Can anyone provide any information about which systems are served by which sensors?

1 - cabin air temp sensor in dash sensor for the climate control (would not affect fuel system)

2 - ETC in the thermostat housing. Seems to be 'hooked up' to the dash temp gauge. To the best of my knowledge it is the main engine temp sensor for the fuel computer as well. Sound right?

3 - air temp sensor in front lower air dam. Seems to be 'hooked up' to the temp display in the instrument cluster. Also may be used for the climate control outside ambient temperature calculations?

4 - air temp sensor in front lower engine compartment. I have no idea what this is for. Calculating ambient air intake temp for fuel system? Calculating air temp on the backside of the intercooler/AC condenser/rad stack?

Additionally, I am pretty sure that I read somewhere that the intake air temp is calculated using the MAF sensor input, but I can't find anywhere that says that now.

Any information anyone has on this would be great.
