Relay name and purpose 850

There is a relay that, if one is facing the vehicle with the hood up, is directly in front of the oil dipstick (which would be between where you are standing and the dipstick) connected to the fan shroud, and has three connectors on it. What's causing me concern is that this relay is cracked lengthwise completely across, and apparently someone took electrical tape and wrapped it around the relay to hold it together. Since I don't know its purpose it's difficult to say whether I need to visit the junkyard and find one, buy a new one, or leave it be, since vehicle has been and is running reasonably well. Thanks for your input.
