tail gate V70-XC70 01

The only way I can figure out to unlike the rear tail gate is to use the remote keypad. When I'm in the car, with the doors locked, even if I unlike the doors using the unlock switch on the door, it does not unlock the tail gate. Since the XC is my wife's car, and I don't carry the remote keypad on my keychain (too bulky), it effectively prevents me from opening the rear gate. Is my unlock switch on the door broken? Can it be re-programmed? Any ideas? On my 98 V70R, I had a lever to open the gate,which seems to have disappeared with the new XC.
