To my recollection, the t-gate on the '01 XC should unlock and lock with the interior switch also just like the other doors do (shouldn't be remote only as you're saying). Does the owners manual mention it?

Unless there's a 3rd seat installed with the optional rear outer key lock cylinder, that rear t-gate has no interior latch or exterior lock.
