I recently purchased a '97 850 and the remote functioned pretty much like yours - i.e. the doors only unlocked about once in 10 pushes, even with new batteries. The dealer provided me with a new remote and it works everytime and from a considerable distance. The bad news is that the remotes are not cheap. Good luck.
