Non-Turbo performance mods S40-V40 1998

In South Africa Turbos are cool, but really expensive when used hard an consistently. I have a 1998 S40 2.0 16V EXEC. I've been pretty impressed with the performance up until now. A turbo performance kit for the car costs almost 20% of the car's value, but also when driven hard in SA turbo upkeep is expensive, especially volvos.

Has anybody got some advice on non-turbo performnace mods.
