Uneven idle and smell 850 1996

Volvo 850 GL 1996 Japanese import. Living in a country where there are no Volvo dealers/workshops.

I have had good luck with engine but it has started to idle unevenly on start-up, hunting around the idle rpm (950rpm). It also is smoking a bit, dark smoke, and it smells strongly, quite sickly sweet smell - probably unburned fuel? When the air con is on it idles too fats (about 1050 rpm). However when driving it runs smoothly and it always starts immediately. Would this be something simple like plugs?
