17" Rims/Tire Wear is absurd! 850 1997

I have the 17" Volan rims on my '97 850R. I find that I'm replacing the tires about every 3 months which is absurd! First set was the BF Goodrich Euro T/A 205/40/17 tires that were new when I bought the car used this past summer. I got a little over 6k miles on that set. The next set are the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s in the 205/45/17 size. Its only been 5k miles and Its time to replace the tires AGAIN. I don't have $500 every 5k miles. By the way, I DO drive normally. Question is if I bought some 16" rims with 205/50/16 tires, would the tires last longer? I've been looking at the 16" Mille Miglia Spiders. I appreciate ANY help that could make my tires last longer!
