I can't reconnect the steering u-joint to the rack! V70-XC70 2002

Hello, all! I'm in the middle of a steering rack replacement on my in-laws' 2002 XC70. Got the old rack out without too much difficulty. Got the new rack in place and started connecting things. However, I've now spent three hours trying to connect the steering u-joint to the rack! It will NOT go on the spline. Everything is lined up and it came off the old one alright, but no matter of futzing will get it to start on the new rack. Any advice? I'm about to pull my hair out. How do you get those dumb things to expand once they're separated from the rack? Driving a screw driver into the slot only makes the u-joint fly around . . .
