overheating/blue smoke 850 1995

1995 850 turbo 165000 mi ran well for 6 yrs

last week engine overheated with blue smoke from exhaust while idling but not while driving

last few days have driven short distances (4-5mi) without overheating or blue smoke

with economic times as they are i may try to fix the car

need mechanic for accurate diagnosis but being an auto illiterate i'm looking for suggestions on what i should be asking and also pitfalls to watch for
