So long as you haven't pulled of the timing belt, you are in great shape.

The timing marks are just a small scratch next to a tooth of the cam gear and crank gear. They are very difficult to see, which is why a lot of people use a little 'white out' to highlight them. A flashlight might help.

Do not remove the belt until all 3 marks are lined up.
