A/C woes! 850

1995 850 N/A. So, last year I replaced the evaporator and drier. Thing ran nicely. There is a heat wave here in NY (as everywhere else). The air is not even cool from the A/C. I have one of those kits where you pierce the can with a gauge attached and add freon. I hooked up the can (started the car...ran it...turned on the A/C). Pierced the can, then unwound the knob to let the freon enter the system. Without even letting the freon into the system too much, the little gauge read up about 60-ish, appears to be way beyond the recommendation. The freon didn't even flow from the can...I can tell, the can barely got cold. I closed down the can-kit and put the cap back on the port. The A/C is lousy now. HELP!
