I believe it and in a way it makes sense (although Volvo staff should get some training). As I recall, HomeLink is a part of a comprehensive system of controllable devices made by Johnson Controls.

Regarding the original question, we have HomeLink on our '99 S80 T6 and '01 V70 T5 and use 2 buttons for each. In our case one button is for the security gate and the other is for a garage door (we were supposed to end up with an arrangement where a single code could be used for both but it didn't materialize for some reason). In the future, I could see us purchasing a module to turn on the entryway lights with the third button as a possibility.
