alum box behind oil pan

Hello,

What is the aluminum box behind the oil pan? not the cooler surrounded by the black plastic, but the flatish box a little further back. Not attached to the oil pan. It looks to have a plate held to it by several screws. I have a small oil leak at the seam of the plate and the box. I think it is motor oil not tranny fluid, but it looks a little darker than my motor oil as i just changed the oil about two hundred miles ago and it still looks honey colored, this stuff looks a little like older oil. doesn't smell like gear oil i am used to. smell like motor oil.
