Synthetic Oil for Used Volvo S70 1998

Just purchased a 1998 S70 GLT. Car was very well Maintained and serviced by the book every 5000 miles. I change the oil in my cars every 2500 miles

at a local Grease Monkey which uses Castrol Products. Is ther any advantages or disadvantages to switching to synthetic oil. The car currently has 50000 miles on it. Are there better products out there. I like the owner of the local shop as he has been very good to deal with and is well respected. Is there really a difference between Castrol, other products and just plain old regular oil. I feel the need to get educated. Thanks. Mike 1998s70Glt
