Thinking of buying an S70 850 1994

Actually....it's my Father in Law. He has a 1991 740 and wants to sell it and get a 1998 S70. Should he do it? Is it a good car? I don't know much about the newer Volvos (as I have an 850) and he wants some information on them. Are they reliable? Is there another newer Volvo that he should look at rather than the S70?
