Re: 5-cylinder engine 850 1994

The inline 5 cylinder has an impressive harmonic, balance and firing interval combination. This is why it runs smoothly and is responsive. I haven't done the calcs for a while, however from memory the I5 is one of the best configurations followed closely by the inline 6. The trend to V6 engines shows how good engineering can be since they are a disaster on paper.

I remember seeing some website links elsewhere on this site (or was it Volvospeed.com) where Volvo related websites are rated by viewers. There was a few sites there on the 850 development and history. Try that avenue. Otherwise, I have done searches for this type of thing and found similar articles for Ford, Jaguar (supercharged) and Nissan engines.
