Radio locked in "OFF - e' mode 850 1996

While tracing the battery drain lately (glove box light), I had to disconnect the battery several times. This sent the radio into panic mode, and it's now reading "OFF e" with the "e" being off to the right side of the display.

I've followed the directions in the owner's manual twice, to no avail:

1. Key in "I" position.
2. Radio on.
3. All other accessories off, so as not to drain the battery.
Bake for two hours, at which point it should be possible to enter the anti-theft code.

No result; I even tried three hours the second time, with more than 24 hours between the two attempts.

Is there some magic chant needed? Am I holding my mouth wrong?
