Transmission Fluid Level - How To? 850 1995

By ignorance, or lack of information in user manual, I was checking trasmission fluid level with the engine off and kept it correct for cold and hot engine.

Recent trend (John O. and others) indicated that the level should be checked with the engine idling. I did that and was amazed to see the dipstick dry! I plan to add some fluid, but want to confirm this - if I make it at max with engine idling, it will be way above any mark with engine off. Is this the way it should be? Also, what is a "HOT" transmission?

These questions look like silly ones, but I already figured that overfilled transmission will not work properly, amd I want to be careful.
