850R Coolant Light 850 1996

I have been getting a red coolant light intermittantly. Started on acceleration, but this morning it stayed on while cruising on the highway. The light goes off while braking, but comes on again when I hit the gas. The temp gauge stays in the normal range, and does not move. This is my first Volvo, and I hope this isn't going to be a nickle and dime car. The car seems well made, just some annoying problems. My 96R has 63000 miles, and I'm not sure of it's maintance history. Any tips or ideas about this light would be appreciated.
