Oil cooler lines leaking. Bypass? 850 1995

I'm wondering if anyone has long term experience with the oil cooler bypassed.

Both lines are leaking quite a bit and it looks like the parts are around $250. So I was thinking, why not just cut off the metal lines and loop a hose instead?

Here are some other thoughts;
1. Could probably have new lines made up at a hydraulic hose place for cheaper;
2. Would a bypass hose with regular hose clamps hold up to 60 psi.;
3. How important is the cooler on a car that is not driven hard or on long grades;
4. Cardboard on the driveway is cheap, but almost as unsightly as the oil drips.

Of course I know that Volvo put those lines on there for a reason, but can anyone positively say that the engine will be ruined without them?
