remove stains? on wheels.. 850R 850 1997

I have recently acquired a set of 17" Volans(96-97 850r). The problem is..something has splashed on them...blackish in color. I have tried to rub vigoursly with some light abrasive polish(3m Finnese) and it won't cut it. Any ideas? other than refinish? I am afraid of using too much abrasive polish as to rub through the anodizing???? I dont know if I will keep these wheels(for my 95 855) or sell. TIA, Tim.
