Timing belt or chain? DIY job? V70-XC70 1998

My '98 V70 AWD has 139K miles and is due for a timing belt (or chain) replacement at 140K. I was thinking of allowing the (supervised) students at the local high school tech center to have a go at it. Figured it might be an easy job and would save me a lot of labor cost. One question the teacher/supervisor said he'd have to check on--didn't know off the top of his head--was whether this car has a timing belt or a timing chain. It sounded like the belt would be the easier to work with. If so, is it a pretty straightforward DIY-type job?

Thanks
