Transmission Frozen - help with triage 850 1996

I need some help with triage on my frozen transmission '96 850 T wagon. This car is lovingly driven to work and then garaged. It has 60k miles on it, had all its regular services, etc.

Symptom: Car will not engage in reverse. No previous symptoms were observed by me. Last experience was a "clunking" noise, car jerked and stopped while trying to get out of garage this morning.

Process: Car has been towed to transmission shop. They are unable to get the car into reverse. They report that the car will not drive. We tried putting it in neutral and pushing, no luck. We tried getting between gears and pushing, no luck. We tried moving throgh the gears quickly and then dropping into reverse, no luck.

Questions:

What next steps might I take?

Is this a common problem on a car that is only 4 years old?

If it comes to rebuild/new any experiences or thoughts?

What costs USD am I looking at?

Any help or adivce will be greatly appreciated.

Peter
