Klaus,
I think this car does need new struts. Any thoughts on the life span of the original struts when the car was brand new? This car has 114k miles on it. Will replacing the struts take away the idiot light issue? I think not.

Sorry to ask this but I may be confused. Is the latch mechanism the part mounted in the trunk lid? Also when you spoke earlier of moving the bumper plate, those two T-40 screws are in a vertical plane in relation to the ground. It looks like they move up or down as opposed to forward or backward.
