does anyone know stereos in the R cars? V70-XC70

I'm trying to get a bead on what the range of the speakers, in terms of full, high, low, etc since I cannot figure out what the factory setup was, given that I bought a car with aftermarket speakers in the doors and dash (the rear pillars are original Volvo paper tweeters). The existing system sounds like crap, IMO, and needs to be changed. The head unit is stock, SC-901, being used with a HON iPod adapter at the moment.

Upon disconnecting the rear and front doors, I could not get a decent sound out of the replacements I was testing out (to replace the pathetic aftermarket speakers teh PO stuck in there). If the speakers are meant to be mids or highs or -what?- that would help to know.
