"How do I tell if the Tbelt has been changed by looking at it. What indicators of wear and tare would there be."


As with all drivebelts, inspect the full length of the timing belt for nicks, cracks in the teeth, frayed edges, distortion or corrosion. Look for glazing which will give the t-belt a shiny appearance over time. Small cracks in the edges of the belt ribs will appear over time, which is acceptable, but there should almost none in a fairly new belt. If you see any cracked or partially broken teeth, that is a definite red flag.

You will need to manually turn the engine over via the crankshaft pulley to examine the full length of the t-belt.

It may be helpful to purchase a new belt from a local auto parts store (hold on to the receipt!) to have as a visual reference when you look at the vehicle.

No documentation from the owner? Hmmmm . . . This is a time when an inspection from trusted, independent Volvo mechanic will prove valuable . . . Just my $0.02 . . . If in doubt, replace it.
