license plate bulb V70-XC70 2002

Both my 2002 V70 license bulbs are out. Do the bulbs just pull out of the socket w/o twisting? Can they be bought online (i can only find ones for the XC model)? And since both are out, are there systematic failures (such as the REM unit) which might be looked into? The tailgate wiper works so I assume the ground for the tailgate is ok.
