All you can do is examine the shafts where the damper motors connect, do not try to run the motors off a 12V supply because that will break them.

Because the vent control works once in a while, I would suspect the pasenger side temp sensor at the grab handle is dirty. Or there is a defect in the ECC unit for the temperature selector (not as likely).

While the dash is out, don't forget to reinforce the hangers for the dash at the firewall.

Replace both, the accumulator and the expansion valve in the engine compartment before you charge the system.
