I ended up putting on a new set of four tires and ran them for 1,000 miles. The AWD pump issue persisted, so that was proof to me (even though the dealer had told me it would) that the error message was just not a diagnostic red flag based on poor tire wear. I had the dealer replace the awp pump/seal for $630.
