No turn signals 850 1996

I've had some issues recently with my turn signal switch. The cruise control on it has worked fine since I bought it in early October. The high/low beam switch also works fine. Only the turn signal has been a problem and particularly the left turn signal.
This past weekend as I attempted a turn, there was a pretty loud buzzing sound and NO signal. After buzzing the right and left turn signals quit working. Only after parking the car overnight did the turn signals begin working again. They will continue working if I just hold the right or left down for a couple of blinks instead actually giving it a full click, left and right. If I click them in place then the blinkers will not work at all until the next time I park it for the night. No fuses are blown.
I've attempted the remove the plastic shroud on the steering column. I remove the screws and it still won't come apart. I can't see if there is a short in the signal arm but either way I'll need to get it open to switch out the signal arm. Anyone with a similar problem? Or a possible solution? Thanks, in advance for any help offered.
