Which tranny fluid? S40-V40

2001 S40...manual says that with my 5 spd auto, to use the DexIII/ Merc. When I went to Volvo today to p/u some things and spoke to the tech guy, he says that they 'only use synthetic'!!! I hear of people using the 3309. What do I do? I want to do a drain-and-fill...not a flush, so whatever I put in, will need to mix and be compatible with the old. I don't know if 3309 or synthetic is compatible with what is in there now (according to the manual in the glove box, the 2001 uses the DexIII). Any thoughts? I am trying to resolve some erratic behaviors on my 145,000 tranny.
