Report on Suspension Changes 850 95

I took the 854 Turbo Sedan over to Thunderhill Saturday, 1/26, for an SCCA Street School. This was the first opportunity to run the car with these changes: Koni Sport Adjustable shocks, Eibach Sport springs and camber adjustment kit and ipd Safety Sway bars (front & rear). I've had the ipd Strut brace in for a few months.

The tires used were Hoosier Competition, 205/45/16, on Borbet Type S wheels (16X7.5).

The suspension changes were made on the preceeding Monday and I got some street time in on them. They were set at full soft on installation. After the first day it was apparent that the Eibach springs required a stiffer shock setting, even for street use. The rears especially allowed too much bounce. On Thursday they were set one turn stiffer than full soft. The fronts were also adjusted 1 turn towards firm. Those changes made the ride firm, but not abusive for street use. Note that that does not imply that they are cloud comfortable! The lesson here is that higher spring rates require additional dampening - not rocket science but good to keep in mind when installing springs and shocks.

The camber was set at 1 degree negative.

At the track the fronts were adjusted another half turn toward Firm.

Comparing it to the last time on the track (12/3) under nearly identical temperatures and track conditions the car handled much more crisply. Turn in was precise and understeer was reduced but not eliminated. Slight rotation was achieved with more being apparent under trail braking. Body roll was significantly reduced.

There were no facilities avialable to take lap times so I have no quantitative measures beyond the fact that top speed at the end of the front straight increased by 5 mph (to 110). That measures only the improvement at the turn leading onto the front straight but it's probably proportional for the rest of the turns.
