No turn signals 850 1996

My flasher was buzzing occasionally when I'd move the lever up or down to signal lane changes. Not switching it all the way but just holding it. Now it's progressed to the turn signals not flashing but staying on when I switch left or right. It might happen for a day, then it's ok.

As mentioned, the flasher unit is in the dash, and is part of the emergency flasher unit that pulls out. There is no flasher relay. I've found on the web a repair for the unit. Simply replace the electrolytic capacitor which has probably dried out after 15 years.

Fwiw, none of the 850s I've seen at the salvage yard still have this module. It's a common failure, if something that works perfectly for 15 years then stops can be referred to as a failure.

The two deep set torx screws that Klaus described can be difficult to reach. When replacing my ignition switch I had the correct size torx driver but it wasn't long enough. 5 minutes with a hacksaw fixed that. I cut away about 3/4" of the plastic handle and the tool fits, no problem. The shaft is still secure in what remains of the handle.

Beat the heck out of another trip to Sears, AZ or Napa to find a tool. When you get the lower column shroud off, be very careful putting it back on. The two torx screws we're talking about should only be snugged up. If you over tighten them, and it takes very little force, you'll break off the plastic mounts in the panel. Super glue and a gently hand took care of this.
