I had the same problem. The "door switch" is integral with the latch. My dealer replaced the two rear door latches as well as the tailgate latch under warranty. Which would be 4 years/50,000 miles in the US. I recall reading in the Haynes manual that the repair is not for the faint-hearted. It involves de-soldering, and re-soldering, and if you're not very careful, you can fry a circuit board. It isn't a cheap repair, if you're out of warranty.

Once again, I don't know what drugs the Volvo "engineers" were using when they thought that one up, either!
