outer tie rod help V70-XC70 1999

Found significant play in drivers side outer tierord end. Ordered new one from Tasca, having trouble with the nut at the outer end which passes through knuckle. I have no way to hold the ball still while i try to undo the nut. The set-up is not like the Volvo replacement which has flats machined into the end of the bolt. should i cut it off above the knuckle? Please advise.
