XC70 STC light and clunking sound- transmission fluid level checking V70-XC70 2002

My 2002 XC70, with 153K, when cold: the STC light flashes and I hear clunking that seems to clunk as the STC light flickers on and off. How do you check the transmission fluid level? How can I fix the clunking and STC light flickering?
