Transmission won't engage 850 1994

Newly aquired 1994 volvo 850 sedan, auto trans. won't engage in any gear selector position. I was told it just needed a nuetral safety(PNP) switch. It has the telltale blinking arrow on the dash but it wont engage at all in any gear. I bought the car for $500 and it's rust free and super clean. I can part it out easy enough but ifI can fix it for $69( the price of the switch) I will.
I tried the trick of cleaning the copper contacts by shifting through all the gears repeatedly.
I am more of a RWD volvo guy but the car is to nice to part out if I can fix it for little $$.
