850 1996 Code reset Time / efforts? 850

Hi, new owner of a 850 wagon and the battery was dead when I bought it so we jumped it and it drove fine. New York inspection station "sees" no codes or "they are in Reset" mode. Tech guy says I need to drive it so the sensors will get a reading and send "good" codes. This may be too simple of an explanation but he told me to drive it for 50 miles and bring it back. I did but no go on the obdII signals. Of course the battery died (my used but I thought good) battery) trying to leave the station so I need to do it again. Any help or advise about city or Highway or number of starts to get this thing to work right. Also it has a "Service" light but no "Check Engine" light.

Thanks

Christopher
