Advice: V70 vs XC70

One of my sons is considering a V70, S70 or XC70. Are the '98-2000 years ones to avoid? I understand the 2001-2001 V70/XC70 models should be passed up due to transmission issues (correct?). My last personal Volvo was a 1994 940, one of the best cars which we have ever owned. My son currently has a '91 Volvo 240 which he has just put over $2,500 into at 173K miles (mass air filter, front brakes/rotors/calipers, plugs/wires/dist, complete exhaust system, (2) rear light assemblies, etc. He needs a more reliable car and thinks a wagon might be a good move. He must rely on independent mechanics. He has considered a Honda Accord due to lower maintenance costs...but, it unfortunately does not have the 'character' of a Volvo.

I know good advice resides on the Brickboard and would be appreciative of anyone's thoughts.

Thanks..John
