front door speaker advice please V70-XC70 1999

The speaker in the driver's door of my wife's '99 V70 goes in and out. If I whomp the door panel with my knee, it will come back, sometimes. This tells me it's a bad connection at or in the speaker. I take this as better news than a bad connection farther up the line or a bad channel in the head unit, SC-816, I think.

If I have to remove the door panel, I feel like I may as well upgrade the speaker even if it's just a bad plug. So, what speaker?

I've searched and found no clear answer for a good upgrade. I'm not looking for the ultimate system, just an improvement. Should I go with a good 3 way speaker or set of components? If I get components, can I use the stock wiring? I think the dash speakers are hard to match, so do I have to change them too or can I keep the stocks.
