Bad heater core S70

So I am driving today and I notice the low coolant light comes on with a funny smell. I pop the hood and the coolant went somewhere. I remove the carpet and the side panel and the heater core is leaking. The heater core was spraying coolant. I have talked to a few people where this has happened, but why would it spray? I can tell the heater core was bad, I have read about this... http://www.sancarlosradiator.com/VoltageDrop/index.html ... trying to see if any1 else has any other info before I replace the heater core.
