Auto to Manual Shifter Mechanism V70-XC70 2001

My 2001 V70XC has the option of moving the automatic gear shifter from Drive to a slot on the left that allows you to move through the gears manually. Two weeks ago I used this option, which I hadn't used in about 2 years, and when I went to put the shifter back into Drive, it was very difficult. Getting it into Park was even harder. I determined that something just under the shifter console had broken or snapped. This was confirmed by a discussion with a Volvo mechanic. The parts were only $20 and it seemed like an easy fix. All the center console parts had to be removed to get to the "black box" containing the broken part. I was able to do this relatively easily but now I'm stuck. I can't figure out how to get the top off the "black box". The Volvo mechanic, who lives 400 miles away, has looked at emailed photos of the assembly and offered directions on how to remove it, three times, but I still can't figure it out. He said there were pop rivets on the sides that had to be removed, but I can't see any. It seems there are some sort of tabs/prongs at all 4 corners holding the cover on that I can't get to release. Everything is plastic so I have to be careful not to break more parts. I've pulled, tugged, pried, etc. all different ways for about 2 hours and got nowhere. The lid to this "black box" is plastic too so I can't chance breaking it either. Has anyone else who has unraveled this mystery be willing to share the secret with me?
