RESOLVED! 4th time's a charm. I finally did what Klaus recommended--leaving the radio button pushed on for the 2-hour waiting period. That solved it.
And as it turned out, the fix was detailed in the owner's manual as well (forehead being slapped).
I still only have two speakers out of the 8 that put out sound, but at least I can have my NPR to and from work.
