Failed brake job V70-XC70 1998

An embarrassing tale. Did brake job on sons car. Replaced everything- calipers, rotors, pads, and I think there was some hardware. That was Xmas time. He went back to school in Michigan where he drove the car once a week short distances for the next 3-4 months. Got home in June saying brakes don't work well. Indeed really poor ware pattern on rotors, little contact. Took apart to find everything really rusted. Same thing on suburban I recently did. I painted contact surfaces on suburban calipers for prevention this time. Its not driven but every 3-4 weeks sometimes. So did I do an incomplete job on v70. Did just sitting in Mich salt and moisture cause lock up? What can one do to prevent this?
