oil dipstick reads different both sides S60 2007

I really started to think I was going insane.

Simple: Check oil. Read the dipstick, oil level is higher on one side vs other. Where this is of concern is in relation to how I "install" the dipstick. If I put it back in with the hash marks/level indicator side facing the water pump/power steering pump I am good to go. I wait a few mins, pull the stick, check the hash marks and I am spot on. rotate ever so delicately and rapidly and I am a bit shy of 1/4 inch higher on the other side. Problem is, if I install the dipstick with hash marks pointing towards radiator, wait a bit, check oil and now I am "over" on the hash mark side and dead where I need to be on the "other side"?

Overly analytical? Maybe, anyone else notice the same or have ideas as to why?

Regards
Steve
