Odometer/speedometer works, then it doesn't, then it does 850 1997

I have a '97 base 850 with 138K miles. For the past week, I have noticed that the odometer and speedometer isn't working when I start the car and take off in drive. While the car is rolling at slow speed, I put the car in neutral, turn it off, re-start it and then both the odo and speedo work. Sometimes, though, the odo/speedo just stops while I am driving.

ABS light is not on. No other codes showing. My mechanic friend thinks its in the cluster because he doesn't feel a sensor would intermittantly work/stop/work - sensors usually are good or bad.

Has anyone had this same problem? Does anyone have a diagnosis for this problem. Can clusters be fixed (other than the plastic gears)?
