It's not a Mitsubishi Carisma! It's built on the same Dutch line as the Mitsu, but it's not the same car! The motor is 4/5 of the S60/V70, or 4/6 of the S80.

I just had an S40 as a service loaner Friday. Nicely optioned with leather on the door panels (!) (or a remarkable fake leather), and screwed together pretty well. Much better than the first S40 I had as a loaner which was falling apart.

Consumer Reports recommends it. They predict reliability as "average".

I wouldn't buy one myself because it isn't available with a manual transmission, and because the rear seat legroom is pretty poor.
