Transmission rear cover 850 97

Does anyone have any experience with replacing the rear cover of the automatic transmissions? Told by a tech at Volvo that the seals in the rear cover were going bad, causing a "clunking" noise when shifting from R-D and vice versa (service bulletin Rear Transmission Cover AW50-42 replacement). They want $700 to replace, but suggested replacing the whole trans. I begged to differ given the trans still does everything very well (positive shifts, clean ATF changed every 3000, no idiot lights, no leaks, etc.).

Any thoughts would be appreciated before I drop the change and find out replacing the trans is the way to go...
